Make Your Own iPhone Bookmark Icons
Today I learned how to develop and implement built in iPhone and iPod Touch icons. This great for the websites that I’ve developed and have server root access on but what about the ones I don’t?
When a website doesn’t have a built in iPhone icon, the iPhone takes a screen capture of the site you’re bookmarking to use for the icon. The result is a lame, unrecognizable thumbnail. If you’re big into bookmarking websites on your iPhone, soon your home screen will look like a dog’s breakfast of weak icons.
However today I found a solution for those websites who don’t have the iPhone icon built in.
Step 1. Navigate to the website you’d like to bookmark (that doesn’t have a built in iPhone icon. Eg. http://montrealcanadiens.com
Step 2. Use the zoom function on your iPhone and zoom in on the website’s logo or word mark. In the case of the Montreal Canadiens’ website they have a nice large logo on the top left-hand side that will make a perfect icon.
Step 3. Once you’ve zoomed into what you think will make a good icon. Click the add icon (+) in your iPhone’s Safari browser and choose Add to Home Screen. That’s it you’re done.
If you aren’t happy with your icon just navigate back to the website and re-position your zoom until it’s right and tight. This isn’t a perfect solution but it’s a great option until all your favourite websites catch up with Apple and build in custom iPhone icons.
Thank you and you’re welcome.
