Don’t Sleep On: Levi Maestro
You know who put us on Levi Maestro? Kanye West. Back when Mr. West had his Kanye University Blog and was posting on the regular, he featured this video: Maestro Knows - Episode 1 (Nike Air Yeezy). That first episode of Levi Maestro’s freshly launched show had a little bit of everything that we loved — art, culture, music and kicks.
That was over three years ago. What’s followed for Levi has been multiple seasons of Maestro Knows, collaborations with some of world’s biggest brands and most recently a brand of his own, Becomb.
What’s inspired us most about Levi and what keeps us coming back for more is the common thread woven through all his work — do and create what you love. He shared these words with his first video of 2013:

Behind every big name there are many people with big ideas, I guess you could call me one of those people. Fortunately I’ve put enough effort forward to afford the opportunity to let some of my ideas shine and this video above is another premature example of just that. I’m only writing this for a few people, the ones that over the years have watched, listened, and wondered which way they can push their ideas and aspirations to that next level. If you’re reading this now, then you know exactly who you are.

This Don’t Sleep On feature is a way for us to highlight the tastemakers, the influencers and the pushers of culture. The ones who know, see it and inspire us to be artists. Levi Maestro is all of those things. Don’t sleep on Levi Maestro.

Watch The Throne + Kanye West

A lot of people don’t understand my appreciation of Kanye West. They get hung up on “the George Bush thing”, or “the Taylor Swift thing”. They call him an ass, arrogant, cocky. People like to hate. I’ve giving up on trying to convince people of Kanye’s creative genius. I kinda just smile inside when people go all negative towards Mr. West. If he hasn’t inspired you by now…

Jake Lodwick and Tim Ferris are the two people right now who are inspiring me to live different, be more creative and remix my life design. I think they should meet.

jakelodwick:

This week’s Odwick.com video: “Clean Machine”.

Watch on Vimeo or download hi-quality Quicktime.

Most of the music I’ve made for Odwick has been created in one session. I would sit down and jam on a synthesizer, or make a beat and freestyle over it. The track in this video was an evolution for me. I started with a beat + freestyle, but then worked on the track in at least ten more sessions, bringing in a guest vocalist, revising the lyrics, speeding it up (originally it was 23 BPM slower), and acquiring a better microphone. It gives me confidence that I will see future musical ideas to fruition. It was also a relatively big production for me; there was a location, director of photography, two dancers, plus I was performing. In general I have trouble relying on people, or, to be clear, of getting into situations where the project’s success is dependent on someone else, so that was an evolution, as well. Also it was the first time I wore a shirt.

Just one more video and this season is finished. I think I’m going to take a break and travel for a while (as one normally does after college or after getting fired from the Internet company he worked at from age 18-26), and see how I feel. At the moment I think, “There must and will be Odwick Season Two!”, but it’s not fair, to myself, to commit to that now; season one must be firmly in my past before I think about reiteration.
